User Interface Design (UI) Services

Our web design agency in the Philippines can help you design and develop user interfaces. We have separate teams for user interface design and user interface development as well as UI testing. We provide a full range of UI services.

Sample work is at the bottom of this page.[here]

Outsourcing User Interface Design

As UI experts, we have created interfaces for simple and complex software and websites. Our experience comes from creating whole website applications and complex websites from start to finish.

Quite often, projects teams are skewed towards functionality or design and will need complimentary help with design, construction or testing. This can be outsourced and works especially well if there is a good collaborative relationship.

Our design and front end teams can work independently and alongside your team to enhance their capabilities and capacity.

What is User Interface Design Specialist?

User Interface designers differ from graphic designers and website designers in that they are trained in user interactivity, graphical interfaces and software functionality.

As specialists, they still adhere to the principles of design and how design principles can be used to help the user achieve their goals but they also bring to the table specialist knowledge that allows for a more systematic approach to creating user interfaces. This is important because website and web applications should look and behave in a predictable manner.

An affordable and practical UI/UX methodology

Starfish have flexible approach to UI design. It makes our service affordable and practical. Meaning, we are more likely to deliver on time and on budget.

Our process and deliverables will depend on:

  • How far along the project are you
  • The input you are able to give us
  • The level of research and planning you wish us to do before actually designing the UI
  • The time you have available
  • The complexity of the job

If you wish to follow an actual Agile / Scrum methodology, this is also possible but this only makes sense if your team is following a similar project style too and you are able to co-manage the project with us.

Do you need a UI Specialist?

A specialist will reduce actual, perceived or hidden complexity so that users can do their thing without feelings of frustration or giving up. There can be a lot at stake, so if your business is trying to get the user to do something, like spend more money, or time on your website, then it’s worth looking into.

You may need a UI specialist if you are developing:

  • a web application
  • a website that takes a user through a series of steps
  • a website that has a complex or multistage forms.
  • a large responsive website with lots of menu options.
  • a website that has complex data that can be manipulated by the user
  • a website that has plenty of functionality, especially if the functions have dependency
  • a website that doesn’t follow interactive convention
  • a website that must work very well on mobile phones

Why do you need a UI specialist?

Why is it that developers can’t create good user interfaces? Why do you need a specialist? Why can’t a web designer do it? Surely it can’t be that hard?

User Interface Design isn’t a hard concept to grasp, and anyone can incorporate UI skills into their repertoire.

The main reason specialists are needed is because the user’s perspective is missing from the conversation. The business is the one dictating its needs, web design and web developers simply follow the requests of the business.

For more information on user needs read UX and Content article.

No one on the team has trained their brains to see things from a user’s perspective but also no one has the time or inclination to see things from this point of view. Hence the need for a specialist.

The UX / UI person will do the necessary work needed to work out things from a user’s perspective. That is all.

Where does a UI specialist fit in to your team?

The role of User Interface designers is to make websites and web applications simple and intuitive to use and at the very least usable.

The will collaborate with business/product owner and software developers in order to work out what the business goals are and how they cab be achieved programmatically.

They will act as the graphic artist and web developer or collaborate with these designers to make sure there is a congruent look.

Depending on the budget and the complexity, they may carry out extensive studies to try and predict how users will behave (user experience design) when using the software or they might jump straight in and draw pretty interfaces based on well-defined design patters and conventions. This will mean they will talk to the product owner / business owner and quite possibly actual users.

Together with a business analyst (again, depending on the size and nature of the project), the will draw diagrams and specification documents for the developers to use as guide.

Problems that User Interface Designers can solve

Our User Interface Designers can help you with:

  • Inconsistent interface behavior
  • Inconsistent interface style
  • Hidden functionality
  • Users not completing their user journey
  • Inconsistent look and feel
  • Complex looking interfaces
  • Users needing instructions to be able to use software
  • Application doesn’t fit on screen
  • User Interface looking irregular or unbalanced
  • Overly long forms
  • Too many choices, indistinguishable choices

User Interfaces for websites viewed on mobile phones

Desktop applications and websites have more freedom and options in how to lay out the interface. With limited screen space, the mobile phone forces designers to be more careful in how things are laid out since every interaction has to be done with limited capacity.

Front End User Interface Development

A separate competence is translating designing into HTML and CSS code for the interface. Our front end team work with various front end languages such as JavaScript, JQuery, Bootstrap, and Foundation. Our team is technology agnostic and will work with in any front end environment, once up to speed.

Front end UI coding is meticulous work, particularly if the UI needs to pixel perfect, has custom functionality, has to take into account a variety of user states and needs to be compatible with a range of devices and browsers.

This is where outsourcing User Interface work makes sense. Doing so in-house will put an unnecessary burden on your core team, creating delays in the project.

User Interface Quality Assurance and Testing

Testing interfaces for bugs and pixel level differences across browsers is time consuming and repetitive. We have separate staff for QA that can work alongside your or our front end team so that they get through the work

Using User Interface Design and User Experience

The act of designing an interface can simply be mean the act of creating the look and feel but quite often there are rational and a process leading up to the actual design of the interface.

This is where User Experience Design may be a better term. The boundary is blurred and wireframes may be considered a User Interface Design activity or a User Experience Design activity.

User Interface Design for ongoing development projects

Development projects are under pressure to finish fast and affordably. Your backend developers will concentrate on building the heart of the website, app or web application. They may only think of engaging a UI team when closer to launch and as part of a marketing, branding and website (solution) exercise.

The User Interface of the web application will need to be branded and polished so as to be consumer friendly. When they engage a UI team late in the day, and if the project already has some momentum, the project cannot be unraveled and reset without delays.

When developers are the ones pushing the project forward, things can feel over-engineered and skewed towards functionality instead of usability. However, it’s amazing what a bit of design simplification and skinning can do.

Our team will research and come up with suggestions but the secret to getting the right results is collaboration (and some negotiation). There is little time to go through elongated studies. The job then is to spot obvious user errors and prioritize improvements to the UI.

User Interface modernization for launched websites

Complex but out of date websites also need modernizing. Modernizing a user interface for an “old” website is a challenge but we have experience in this arena too. Please see website redesign services for details.

UI Software Product Research and Development

If you’re developing a web application or complex website, we can help you through the early stages of product development right up until user interface design and prototyping.

This is useful for those seeking to create a working prototype in order to get further funding.

Our team can help you quickly and affordably guide you through the process. Key questions we can help answer:

  • What technologies will I need to use?
  • What type staff will I need?
  • What will the software look like?
  • How will it function?
  • How complicated will it be to develop the web application?

Please take a look at our web development services too.
